01 / The idea

A little less scrolling.
A lot more talking.

Homeschool Hangouts brings small groups of homeschoolers together on Zoom for eight weekly 45-minute sessions. The kids all stay in the same group each week, so there’s time to settle in and get to know one another.

We’ll play games, chat and let the group help shape how each session flows. There are no lessons, but a few simple rules help make it safe and fun for everyone.

“A regular place to show up, have a laugh and see some familiar faces.”

02 / Find your group

SOMEWHERE
TO BELONG.

Different ages, different interests, different energy. We’ll put together groups that feel comfortable and give everyone room to join in.

A

8-11 years

B

11-14 years

C

14-18 years

These age ranges are guides, with intentional overlap. We match children by age, interests and availability, and what seems likely to make a comfortable group. Final groups, days and times are organised after applications are reviewed. A group or time slot will run only if we can bring a suitable group together. Each group has up to eight enrolled children.

03 / In the hangout

So, what actually happens?

We start with hellos and catch ups. Then we get into that week’s theme, which we’ll share on the previous call. The kids can help choose themes too, especially when there’s something the whole group wants to try.

That could mean a game, a challenge, a conversation, sharing an interest or something else entirely.

Just good company and some fun ways to keep everyone engaged and talking.

FOR HOMESCHOOLERS.

Illustrated portrait of a homeschooling parent with four boys outdoors

Homeschool Hangouts was created by a homeschooling family who know that finding your people isn’t always easy.

Our four boys, whose ages span the proposed groups, help shape and run the hangouts. Their involvement is flexible. They might get conversations going, introduce an activity or share an idea that helps everyone feel included.

An adult parent with an approved Queensland Blue Card moderates every session, keeping things safe, friendly and relaxed.

A little about us

We're a Sunshine Coast homeschooling family with four boys. We've been homeschooling for seven years and know that finding opportunities for kids to make genuine friendships isn't always easy.

We created Homeschool Hangouts to help homeschooling kids connect in a relaxed, welcoming environment where they can chat, have fun and build friendships.

We understand that every child socialises differently. Online hangouts offer another way to connect, particularly for those who find in-person groups a little challenging or can't always get out and about.

Our boys have a wide range of interests, from animals and pets to gaming, technology, LEGO, engineering, music, baking and everything in between! We know how lovely it can be to find others who share your interests, and we're looking forward to discovering what everyone else is passionate about too.

We're simply a family hoping to make connecting with other homeschoolers a little easier, in a safe and comfortable environment.

See you in the groups!

07 / Good people, good ground rules

A SPACE THAT FEELS
GOOD TO BE IN.

Fun works best when everyone feels comfortable. Here’s how we look after the group.

An adult in every call

Every session is moderated by an adult with an approved Queensland Blue Card. Concerns are addressed promptly and appropriately.

Respecting privacy

We use Zoom meeting security settings. Sessions aren’t recorded, and private messaging between participants is disabled. There’s no private messaging between adults and children.

Everyone plays a part

Children are expected to be kind and respectful. Parents need to remain reachable by phone during sessions.

Joining in

It’s okay to warm up.

Some children are shy, anxious or need a little time to settle. Passing on an activity, taking a short break or needing encouragement is fine. These are interactive groups, so cameras and microphones are generally expected to be on, and children should be willing to join in. The groups aren’t designed for someone planning to stay silent or keep their camera off throughout.

Before your first hangoutParticipation rulesOpen to read the shared ground rules

We have a few shared expectations that help everyone feel welcome, safe and able to enjoy their hangout sessions.

Show up kindly

  • Speak to others with kindness and respect. Bullying, harassment, discrimination, insults and inappropriate language are not okay.
  • Listen when someone else is speaking and leave space for others to contribute.
  • It’s fine to pass on one activity or take a short break. We ask everyone to be willing to join in over time, with camera and microphone generally on.

Keep the group private

  • Don’t share personal contact details, including surnames, addresses, phone numbers or social media handles, in the hangout.
  • Don’t send private messages or try to contact other participants privately through the programme. Adults and children do not exchange private messages through Homeschool Hangouts.
  • Don’t record, screenshot or share anything from a session without permission. Respect what other children choose to share in the group.

Make your Zoom space comfortable

  • Use a suitable name on Zoom and wear clothing appropriate for a group video call.
  • Choose a place with an appropriate background and avoid showing other people’s private information on camera.
  • Follow the adult moderator’s instructions so the group can run smoothly.

Parents and guardians

Please stay reachable by phone while your child is in a session. If your child can’t attend, let the organiser know when you can. Talk through these rules with your child before their first hangout.

08 / Good to know

QUESTIONS?
FAIR ENOUGH.

Does my child need to be confident or outgoing?

No. Some children take longer to warm up. We simply ask that they’re willing to join in.

Does my child need to have their camera on?

Generally, yes. These are interactive social groups, although we understand that children may occasionally need a short break.

Can siblings join together?

Yes, if they are paying siblings and have been placed in the same group. Each sibling requires a separate application and counts towards the group limit. For the best experience, we recommend that each child have their own device so people are free to talk as needed.

What if my child doesn’t know anyone?

That’s completely fine. We will all be new at the beginning, and everyone will feel familiar very quickly.

Will the same children attend each week?

Yes. Children are assigned to a group for all eight weekly sessions.

What if we can’t attend one week?

Occasional absences are understandable. Please let the organiser know when possible. Missed sessions are not automatically rescheduled.

When will we know our session time?

After applications have been reviewed and groups organised.

Do we pay when we apply?

No. Payment is only requested once a place has been offered.

Is this a class or educational programme?

No. Homeschool Hangouts is for socialising only. There are no lessons or homework unless the group agrees on an activity for the following week that requires them to bring something along to the next session.

Are sessions recorded?

No. Sessions are not recorded.
